With the increasing number of young breast cancer patients, is it always better to start breast cancer screenings early in your 20s or 30s?

Because a high proportion of Korean women have 'dense breasts,' breast ultrasounds are often performed alongside mammograms to better detect lesions. However, undergoing ultrasound screenings at an early age can frequently uncover benign nodules that are unlikely to develop into cancer, which may lead to unnecessary biopsies or over-treatment.

There are, however, exceptions for 'high-risk groups' who absolutely require early screening. If you have a family history of early-onset breast cancer, carry a BRCA gene mutation, or have a history of chest radiation therapy, it is recommended to start your screenings at age 30, which is 10 years earlier than the general guideline.
