우리가 음식을 섭취하면 식도는 스스로 수축하며 음식을 아래로 짜주는 운동(연동운동)을 해야 합니다. 하지만 이러한 운동 기능이 제대로 이루어지지 않는 '식도 운동 질환' 환자분들의 경우, 음식물이 원활하게 내려가지 못해 가슴 답답함이나 통증을 느끼게 됩니다.

이러한 식도 기능의 문제를 정확하게 감별하고 진단하는 검사가 바로 '식도 내압 검사'입니다. 24시간 산도 검사와 마찬가지로 코를 통해 가는 관을 삽입하지만, 하루 종일 착용하는 것이 아니라 검사대에서 물을 여러 번 삼키며 식도 내부의 압력과 운동 상태를 정밀하게 측정하게 됩니다.

이 검사는 삼킴 곤란 환자뿐만 아니라 약물이 잘 듣지 않는 난치성 위식도 역류질환 환자분들의 정확한 원인 파악을 위해서도 시행됩니다. 검사 소요 시간은 대개 20~30분 이내로 비교적 짧고 간편하게 끝납니다.

Have you ever experienced a sensation of food getting stuck in your chest when eating or drinking, or suffered from unexplained difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)?

Normally, when we consume food, the esophagus must actively contract to push it down through coordinated muscular movements (peristalsis). However, for individuals with "esophageal motility disorders" where this mechanism fails to function properly, food cannot pass smoothly, leading to chest discomfort or pain.

The diagnostic standard for identifying and differentiating these functional esophageal issues is "esophageal manometry." Similar to the 24-hour pH test, it involves inserting a thin tube through the nose. However, instead of wearing it all day, this test measures the precise pressure and movement inside the esophagus within a short period while the patient swallows small sips of water.

This procedure is essential not only for patients with difficulty swallowing but also for determining the root cause in patients with medically refractory GERD. The entire test is relatively quick and simple, typically completed within 20 to 30 minutes.
