Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a condition in which hemolytic anemia (anemia caused by the destruction of red blood cells), thrombocytopenia (a drop in platelets, the blood components that help stop bleeding), and acute kidney injury (a sudden decline in kidney function) occur together. It is also known as “hamburger disease,” a name that came from cases linked to eating undercooked hamburger patties. It occurs most often in children age 5 and younger. If these symptoms are suspected, please see a medical specialist right away.2026-06-26
